Get off the beaten path<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Many popular destinations such as historic cities, beaches, and other tourist hotspots were being overrun by troops of visitors, a phenomenon known as \u201covertourism.\u201d<\/p>\n

Many of these places don\u2019t live up to their expectations \u2013 you may have to spend hours standing in line, to realize that, what you saw in that picture that made you decide to take that trip, could not be further from the real experience because, usually, these places are really packed.<\/p>\n

Air travel, driving, and other forms of transportation make up the largest part of tourism\u2019s carbon footprint. Planes and cars usually are the least efficient modes of transportation. If possible, travelling by train or coach it\u2019s a better option to cut your emissions while admiring the scenery. Save water and energy<\/strong><\/h3>\n

When you\u2019re on vacation, do the best you can tosave water and energy resources. Turn off the lights, TV, and any other electronics when not in use. Don\u2019t forget to turn off the AC or set the thermostat a few degrees higher when leaving your hotel. Take a short shower instead of a bath. Carbon offsetting allows you to balance out the carbon footprint of your trip, by reducing emissions somewhere else in the world. To calculate your carbon foot-print you can use an online carbon calculator, then purchase offsets equivalent to the amount of CO2 you produced. Paying entrance fees and\/or operator permits to preserve these special places and animals, you\u2019ll be helping to fund the conservation activities necessary to protect these areas while also providing income to local communities.<\/p>\n

Look for information about the specific practices and policies that they\u2019ve implemented, and ask questions to show that you\u2019re factoring sustainability into your purchase decisions.<\/p>\n
