Avianca expands from Medellín and consolidates its second hub

Avianca is pursuing a strategy of strengthening its position in the Colombian air market. This involves the expansion of its offer from Medellín, with the objective of consolidating its second hub at José María Córdova airport in Rionegro. The rationale behind this strategy is twofold.
Firstly, it seeks to relieve congestion at Bogotá’s El Dorado International Airport. Secondly, it aims to simplify connectivity for passengers in the region.

In order to meet the growing demand from travellers, Avianca has announced the launch of new routes to key destinations in South America. From June 2024, passengers will be able to flight direct from Medellín to Buenos Aires (Argentina), Santiago (Chile) and Lima (Peru), which will provide attractive options for those wishing to explore the region.

The route between Medellín and Buenos Aires will commence on 15 June with daily frequencies. While flights to Lima and Santiago will commence on 1 and 3 June.

David Alemán, Avianca’s Director of Sales for Colombia and South America, emphasises the airline’s dedication to Medellín, which it regards as a pivotal city. This dedication is reflected in the expansion of flight capacity and investment to enhance connectivity.

In addition to the routes to Argentina, Chile and Peru, Avianca has announced plans to continue expanding its offer from Medellín. This will include the introduction of new destinations such as Ecuador, Punta Cana and Aruba.

These initiatives serve to reinforce Avianca’s commitment to Antioquia and its objective of offering passengers a more efficient and convenient travel experience. They also serve to position Medellín as a key hub in the airline’s Latin American operations network.
