When you mention El Chaltén, it’s almost automatic to think of hiking, towering mountains, and raw nature. And rightly so: it’s Argentina’s national capital of trekking and a must for walking enthusiasts. However, during our recent Fam Trip through Patagonia in April 2025, we experienced firsthand that El Chaltén is much more than just trekking.

A village with its own soul

First, a key point: El Chaltén is not a city, but a small mountain village. Unlike other tourist destinations like El Calafate, it lacks extensive hotel and dining infrastructure – but what it has is functional and welcoming. And far from being a disadvantage, this is part of its charm. Chaltén invites travelers to slow down, reconnect with nature, and enjoy the essentials, free from distractions.

This is crucial for setting the right expectations: visitors to El Chaltén will find an authentic and peaceful place, ideal for a comfortable stay, though without the luxuries of major tourist hubs. The experience is centered around the connection to the surroundings, simplicity, and the immensity of the landscape.

Our standout experiences

During our stay, we aimed to experience both the destination’s classic offerings and some that show it from a different perspective – a perfect combination to understand its versatility.

On one hand, we hiked to Laguna Capri, an accessible self-guided trail surrounded by native forest and offering stunning views of Mount Fitz Roy – weather permitting. It’s perfect for those seeking a moderate hike without too much difficulty.

✨ Tip: Bringing water and snacks makes the experience even more enjoyable when reaching the lake, where the silence and breathtaking scenery offer a truly unique moment.

Desierto Lake & Vespignani Glacier: A Scenic Adventure

On the other hand, one of the most surprising activities was the navigation on Lago del Desierto, combined with a hike to the Vespignani Glacier viewpoint. This excursion starts with a scenic 40 km drive from El Chaltén along a gravel road, skirting the Río de las Vueltas and stopping at panoramic spots like Salto Argentino.

The boat departs from Punta Sur Dock and takes about 30 minutes, passing by the Huemul and Crestón Glaciers before arriving at the base of the Vespignani Glacier. There, travelers have 4 hours to choose between four hiking trails of varying difficulty. The Blue Trail is the most demanding, with a 535-meter elevation gain leading to a spectacular viewpoint; the Red Trail offers a great view of Fitz Roy and the glacier with moderate effort; the Yellow Trail is less demanding but still reaches a beautiful viewpoint; and the Green Trail is ideal for interpretive walks through the forest.

You can also coordinate a return stop at the Chorrillo del Salto viewpoint, or visit Laguna Huemul for a more relaxed alternative with incredible views.

In addition to the classic self-guided hikes – suitable for all levels – El Chaltén offers a wide range of adventure tourism activities, perfect for travelers seeking active or unique experiences in the same natural setting:

- Rock climbing and introductory courses with specialized instructors – perfect for those looking to try something new.

- Horseback riding through local valleys and scenic viewpoints – a unique way to explore without physical strain.

- Scenic boat rides on Lago del Desierto or Río de las Vueltas, offering a different perspective of the landscape.

- Cultural activities and workshops that reflect the local spirit, from markets to encounters with local producers and artists.

How many days should you spend in El Chaltén?

We recommend a minimum of 2 nights to enjoy the area without rushing, though a 3 to 5 night stay allows you to explore both hiking trails and alternative excursions.
It’s a great destination to combine with others in Patagonia, like El Calafate, Torres del Paine, or Route 40.
