Peru Travel News, May 2021 Update

Travel restrictions with the United Kingdom in Peru are eliminated and, on the other hand, Cusco proposes to hold the Inti Raymi festival without an audience.

Good news for Peru’s tourism industry reported the premier Violeta Bermúdez when she announced that the government of Peru has decided to eliminate travel restrictions with the United Kingdom, since the variant of Covid-19 from there has not had great incidence in the country. This exemption began to take effect on May 10 of this year and, only people who have been in India in the last 15 days, must quarantine when entering the country.

On the other hand, somewhat disappointing news came to light, as the Cusco authorities have proposed holding the Inti Raymi festival without an audience this year due to the pandemic. The Provincial Municipality of Cusco has proposed to hold the famous festival, under strict biosafety protocols and with limited capacity. The commune proposes that of the 700 artists who used to participate in this event, it would be reduced to only 450.

The Inca staging would take place in its three stages: the Qoricancha (temple of the Sun), Plaza Mayor and Sacsayahumán, but without an audience.

This cultural celebration is an Andean ceremony celebrated in honor of Inti (the Sun God), which takes place every winter solstice (June 24, in the southern hemisphere) and is the most important in Cusco as it brings together thousands of national tourists and foreign. However, it was suspended last year due to the pandemic. This was the first time that the Inti Raymi was cancelled from its reinstatement in 1944.
