Planning your Torres del Paine Base Hike
What you need to know

At Trips SouthAmerica, three of our team members completed this challenging day hike specifically to provide authentic insights for our travelers. This comprehensive guide covers logistics, gear recommendations, and real trail conditions from our recent expedition.

Ready to explore Torres del Paine? The Base Torres hike is included in our Adventure in Torres del Paine package – perfect for active travelers seeking guided day adventures in Patagonia.

Getting to the Base Torres trailhead

Our Torres del Paine day trip began with a 6:30 a.m. pickup from Puerto Natales – the gateway to Torres del Paine National Park. The scenic 1.5-hour drive through Chilean Patagonia happens mostly in darkness, giving you time to rest before the challenging day ahead.

We reached Laguna Amarga entrance around 8:00 a.m., perfectly timed to witness a spectacular Patagonian sunrise over the park. From the parking area, a 1km walk leads to the Visitor Center, where you’ll find restrooms, souvenirs, and last-minute snacks.

💡Pro tip: Leave a change of clothes in your vehicle. Pack dry socks, a fresh T-shirt, and comfortable shoes for after completing the trek – you’ll thank us later!

Guided tours and Safety Requirements

During Torres del Paine’s low season (May to September), certified guides are mandatory for the Base Torres hike. Our fall expedition featured an ideal 1:4 guide-to-hiker ratio, ensuring personalized attention and maximum safety on this challenging terrain.

High season note: Summer months feature 1:6 guide ratios for Base Torres hikes.

The Base Torres Trek: What to Expect

The Base Torres trail spans 24km roundtrip and typically requires 8-10 hours depending on your hiking pace and fitness level. While not technically demanding, this trek requires moderate to excellent fitness due to significant elevation changes and challenging terrain.

Complete Route Breakdown

Visitor Center to Paso de los Vientos (Windy Pass)

Starting from Torres del Paine’s main access point, the trail climbs steadily toward the aptly named “Windy Pass.” This initial section offers sweeping valley views across Chilean Patagonia and serves as your first taste of the park’s dramatic landscapes.

Descent to Chileno Camp

This midpoint refuge provides the perfect spot for hydration and refueling. Chileno Camp features the only bathroom facilities along the entire route, so plan your stops accordingly.

Andean Forest Recovery

The middle section winds through native Patagonian forest, offering hikers a chance to recover strength before the final challenge. This forested area provides welcome shelter from Patagonia’s notorious winds.

The Moraine – The Ultimate Challenge

The final kilometer represents the trek’s most demanding section. This steep climb over loose rocks and uneven moraine terrain demands complete focus and significant physical effort. Many consider this the make-or-break moment of their Torres del Paine experience.

The Reward: Base Torres Lagoon

At the lagoon beneath Torres del Paine’s famous granite towers, the payoff is extraordinary. Three massive granite spires rise dramatically from the turquoise glacial lake, creating one of Patagonia’s most photographed viewpoints.

Best Time to Hike Base Torres

Fall (March-May): Our experience during this shoulder season offered ideal conditions – fewer crowds, mandatory guides for safety, and stable weather windows. Perfect for serious hikers seeking authentic Torres del Paine experiences.

Summer (December-February): Peak season brings crowds but longest daylight hours and warmest temperatures for this challenging trek.

Spring (September-November): Variable conditions but emerging wildflowers create unique photography opportunities.

Winter (June-August): Limited access and extreme weather make Base Torres unsuitable for most hikers.
