Sustainable Travel in South America

During the past 2 decades, the travel industry has grown immensely. Travelling have become not just fashionable, but more accessible to everyone who feels like exploring the world, live different experiences, or simply collect picturesfrom different locations to tick them off their bucket lists. But this growth also came with negative consequences such as gentrification, crowded streets, pollution, and habitat loss.

Sustainable tourism focuses on reducing tourism’s negative impacts and on maximizing its positive benefits for communities, cultures, ecosystems, and the planet.

As a company within the travel industry, we aim to minimize the potentially negative impact of the activity, without leaving aside our company mission that is to provide our travelers with authentic, safe and rewarding travel experiences in South America, making sure they receive the best service.

Our quality standards are not only based on an authentic travel experience for our customers but also focus on the interests of locals, the welfare of our employees, clients, partners, suppliers and the community.

These are the reasons why we have incorporated in our Sustainable Policy the Global Code of Ethics for Tourism as a fundamental frame of reference for responsible and sustainable tourism.

As a traveller you may ask yourself what can you do to start traveling in a more sustainable way, here we have some tips to share with you.

Our objective is to ensure that the children of the Recycled Instruments Orchestra continue to receive their music lessons and enjoy this space for inclusion and empowerment.

Through this partnership, we support a programme that not only teaches music, but also promotes fundamental values such as inclusion, equality, commitment, social justice, solidarity and diversity. Our objective is to enable children to flourish and become active agents of change within their communities.

Get off the beaten path

Many popular destinations such as historic cities, beaches, and other tourist hotspots were being overrun by troops of visitors, a phenomenon known as “overtourism.”

Many of these places don’t live up to their expectations – you may have to spend hours standing in line, to realize that, what you saw in that picture that made you decide to take that trip, could not be further from the real experience because, usually, these places are really packed.

Getting off the beaten path allows travellers to have a more unique and authentic experience while avoiding the crowds.

Take it easy, don’t get too busy.

Even that an itinerary full of activities could look amazing on paper, the truth is you’ll be running from one place to another and won’t be able to really appreciate none of them.

Opting for a longer holiday with fewer destinations will allow you to really experience the places you are visiting, to immerse yourself in the culture, build deeper connections with local people, and get to know the destination’s unique charms.

This way of travelling is also better for the environment since it reduces the amount of carbon emissions generated by the different transportations you will need to travel from one place to another.

Use efficient modes of transportation

The travel industry is one of the biggest contributors to climate change. Air travel, driving, and other forms of transportation make up the largest part of tourism’s carbon footprint. Planes and cars usually are the least efficient modes of transportation. If possible, travelling by train or coach it’s a better option to cut your emissions while admiring the scenery. Once you’re in your destination, taking the bus, a tram, or cycling are better optionsthan renting a car.

Save water and energy

When you’re on vacation, do the best you can tosave water and energy resources. Turn off the lights, TV, and any other electronics when not in use. Don’t forget to turn off the AC or set the thermostat a few degrees higher when leaving your hotel. Take a short shower instead of a bath. Hand-wash your own clothes and hang up the “Do Not Disturb Sign” to avoid unnecessary cleaning.

Offset your carbon foot-print

Carbon offsetting allows you to balance out the carbon footprint of your trip, by reducing emissions somewhere else in the world. To calculate your carbon foot-print you can use an online carbon calculator, then purchase offsets equivalent to the amount of CO2 you produced. Your contribution will be invested in projects that reduce carbon and other greenhouse gases.

Respect local communities

Be aware that certain gestures, clothing, or words are considered offensive in some destinations. Remember that the destination you are visiting is someone else’s home. Obey the local laws and guidelines, from traffic rules to health and safety precautions. Here in South America, for example, you should ask permission to aboriginals if you want to take a picture of them, due to many think you’re stealing their soul when doing such a thing.

Visit parks and protected areas

Paying entrance fees and/or operator permits to preserve these special places and animals, you’ll be helping to fund the conservation activities necessary to protect these areas while also providing income to local communities.

As you’re planning your post-COVID travels, look up the protected areas in your destination and add one to your itinerary.

Choose sustainable accommodations and operators

Keep in mind that just because a company markets themselves as ‘green’ or ‘sustainable’ doesn’t mean they necessarily are. Look for information about the specific practices and policies that they’ve implemented, and ask questions to show that you’re factoring sustainability into your purchase decisions.
