The Plurinational State of Bolivia, better known as Bolivia, is one of the most diverse countries in South America.
It has a population of 11.35 million inhabitants, 36 ethnic groups live together on its lands and more than 75% of them are within the Amazon basin, which means that you could easily spend several weeks researching their culture and natural wealth.
The official languages of Bolivia is Spanish and all the languages of the native nations and indigenous peoples. Among the latter, the most widespread are Aymara, Quechua and GuaranĂ. Other indigenous languages are: araona, baure, bĂ©siro, canichana, cavineño, cayubaba, chácobo, chimán, that ejja, among others.
However, it is possible to communicate in English at the three, four and five star hotels.
The best season for visiting depends on what you want to do.
From May to October is the best time to visit Bolivia, as the dry weather brings sapphire skies and less travel disruption. This is the Bolivian winter, though, so the highlands will be cold. The humid jungle, however, benefits from the cooler temperatures. The best opportunity to see the famous ‘mirror effect’ in the Salar de Uyuni are in the month of December, January and February.

It is a country in central South America, bordered to the north and east with Brazil, to the southeast with Paraguay, to the south with Argentina, to the southwest with Chile and to the northwest with Peru. Bolivia has 3 international airports La Paz International Airport in El Alto, Jorge Wilsterman Airport in Cochabamba and Viru Viru Airport in Santa Cruz. Most of the airlines have daily flights to La Paz or Santa Cruz from the main cities in South America and some additional flights from Europe. The most common connections from Europe are made in Lima, PerĂş; Sao Paulo, Brasil; or Buenos Aires, Argentina.
It is possible to enter Bolivia through several regions, particularly from Lake Titicaca and the Amazon. Steamboats cross the Lake to the Peruvian port of Puno, 90 km from La Paz.
There are rail connections from Oruro, through the Altiplano via Uyuni and Tupiza to La Quiaca/VillazĂłn on the Argentinean border.
You can enter Bolivia by land on buses from all five neighbouring countries – Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Paraguay and Peru.
From Chile: There are 3 routes. Through Tambo Quemado, Calama and the Laguna Verde, where you can enjoy a trip to the Salar de Uyuni.
From Peru: The easiest and most widely used route through Peru is from Puno via the Kasani border
From Brazil: The main crossover in Brazil is at Quijarro – from here you can travel to Santa Cruz by train.
From Argentina:The crossing is at La Quiaca to Villazón or Pocitos.
From Paraguay: From AsunciĂłn to Santa Cruz is a long journey (approximately 24 hours).
