Due to its extension, 176.215 km² (68.03699187 sq miles), Uruguay is the second smallest country in South America.

Uruguay has one of the most homogeneous populations in South America; the most common ethnic backgrounds by far being those from Spain, Italy, Germany and France i.e. Spanish Uruguayans, Italian Uruguayans, German Uruguayans and French Uruguayans.
The main language spoken in Uruguay is Spanish. Additionally, there are some regions along the border where Portuñol Riverense is spoken.

Uruguay covers 176,215 km² and is the second smallest country in South America, after Suriname. Thanks to its geographical location you can arrive by air, sea or land from its neighboring countries.
The international airports of the country are served by the major airlines of the world, with regional flights from Buenos Aires, Porto Alegre, San Pablo, RĂo de Janeiro, AsunciĂłn, Panama, Santiago de Chile and Lima.
The main airports are the International Airport of Carrasco (18 kilometers from the center of Montevideo), the International Airport Laguna del Sauce in Punta del Este (Maldonado) and the airport in Colonia de Sacramento, International Airport Laguna de los Patos.
The new, International Airport of Carrasco was inaugurated in 2009 and is considered one of the most modern and attractive airports in the world. From there you have easy access to the center of Montevideo as well as the east coast with direct buses traveling in both directions. It is also easy to hire a private transfer, take a taxi or rent a car from some of the local car rental agencies in the airport.
By Sea: Cruises put in mainly at the port of Montevideo, Punta del Este and Piriápolis.
By River: There are numerous boats and ferries linking Buenos Aires with Colonia, Carmelo and Montevideo that also allow the transport of automobiles.
